Description
CAROLINA BLUEBIRD MALE by KAREN WILES
The beautiful male Carolina Bluebird will stand by and guard the female diligently while she lays a clutch of 5 to 7 aqua colored eggs for her nest. She lays one egg daily in the morning until she has laid her full brood. She does not begin sitting upon the nest until all the eggs are laid unless temperatures dip down into the chilly numbers. But after the final egg has been laid, the nesting begins for about 11 to 14 days before they hatch. He protects her during the entire nest building and egg laying process, so intently that he even pokes his head into the birdhouse to check for snakes and wasps before she enters again to make sure no harm comes to her. After this protective period which also includes feeding her while she sits on the nest and attending to her every need, the countdown begins for the eggs to hatch. Amazingly, all the eggs are hatched on the same day in the order they were laid. He is one of the most colorful and mate protective birds of the Carolinas along with the painted buntings, bluejays, and of course the red cardinals.
