Despite their stunning color, blue amorphous are not truly blue. Like all butterflies, amorphous have tiny, overlapping scales covering their wings. The scales upon their wings have tiny ridges that naturally reflect blue light. So even though the butterflies aren't actually colored blue, their wing tops look blue to our naked eye. Blue amorphous spend most of their time on the rainforest floor blending right in with Mother Nature as the underside of their wings are brown when folded up. In addition to their natural camouflage they also have two brown spots on each wing which look like eyes to hide them even more. The entire life cycle of the blue morpho is only a mere 115 days. Wiles "Blue Morpho Beauty" was photographed on the grounds of the Peace Lodge in La Paz, Costa Rica...

Wonderful shot! Amazing to get the wings open, I had quite a time chasing these guys around and never got a good one.
