Description
I spotted this coyote in Jasper, Canada high in the rocks above the highway. He let me know very quickly he was not interested in being photographed at all. It's simply amazing how well he blended in with the rocks and the beauty found in this very wild and adaptable animal. This is 1 image of 3 available @ http://karen-wiles.artistwebsites.com
The coyote (US /kaɪˈoʊti¢°/ or /ˈkaɪ.oʊt/, UK /kɔɪˈjoʊteɪ/, or /kɔɪˈjoʊt/;Canis latrans), also known as the American jackal, brush wolf, or the prairie wolf, is a species of canine found throughout North and Central America, ranging from Panama in the south, north through Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It occurs as far north as Alaska and all but the northernmost portions of Canada. The term is also used for the eastern coyote (Canis latrans var.), which contains not only C. latrans but also significant percentages of Canis lupus lycaon ancestry.
Currently, 19 subspecies are recognized, with 16 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and three in Central America. Unlike the related gray wolf, which is Eurasian in origin, evolutionary theory suggests the coyote evolved in North America during the Pleistocene epoch 1.8 million years ago (mya), alongside the dire wolf. Although not closely related, the coyote evolved separately to fill roughly the same ecological niche in the Americas that is filled in Eurasia and Africa by the similarly sized jackals. Unlike the wolf, the coyote's range has expanded in the wake of human civilization, and coyotes readily reproduce in metropolitan areas.

Karen, What a great wildlife photo taken in the animal's natural habitat, I love photographing wild animals but a lot of them are from zoos but I find places to take the shot so it appears the animal is not in a zoo. But obviously you did not have to worry about that here. Great detail in the coyote and his surroundings and your right he blends right into the surroundings perfectly. Great wildlife shot, voted, FB promoted
