HUMPBACK BRIDGE by KAREN WILES
Humpback Bridge is the only remaining covered bridge in Alleghany County, Virginia and is the oldest bridge of it's kind in the entire United States! A cherished landmark, it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a beautiful gathering place for many to picnic, or to simply admire her simple beauty and antique craftsmanship. The Humpback Bridge was constructed in 1857, and the design of the bridge to be covered and arched, was to increase it's longevity and keep the midpoint above flood waters. She is nearly 110 foot long and was built with a broad axe and put together with hand hewed locust pins.
