A beautiful sun dog is captured hovering over the golden waters of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park among the vast winter snow.
Sun dogs appear only when the sun is near the horizon and are named such because they tend to follow the sun, much like a dog follows it's master. When the sunlight refracts through icy clouds containing hexagonal plate crystals, a sun dog may form, with the red always being near the sun and the blue always on the outside away from the sun.
