The gorgeous and somewhat mysterious yellow pitcherplant has nodding flowers and leaves modified as hollow pitchers, which function to passively trap insects, luring them with internal nectar, then digesting them or drowning them with their fluids and their nutrients to later be absorbed by the plant. This particular pitcher plant was created in the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous preserve in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Venus flytrap is also found in Wilmington and the Cape Fear area is the only area in the world to naturally grow the Venus flytrap. It is suspected that a meteor crashed into the Cape Fear area years ago and presented a special growing ground for these phenominal plants.
