The cockscomb known for it's spectacular flowering is named in resemblance to the roosters's
comb. It is glorified by horticulturists for it's distinctive inflorescence, in the form of a bright red and sometimes yellow wavy crest. The flowers can be cut and dried to make dry bouquets and are frequently used as ornamental flowers indoors. Their leaves and flowers can be used as edible vegetables. They are often grown in India, Western Africa, and South America. They are annual plants of tropical origin and lack a woody stem, with a straight, juicy and unbranched stem. Their flowers last up to 8 weeks and feel much like velvet. Each flower produces approximately 43,000 seeds per ounce. It is the most widely used leafy vegetable in Southern Nigeria and is also part of of the diet in Benin, Congo and Indonesia. This was one of the first flowers my Mother taught me how to grow as a small child, as we loved the velvety touch of this divine and unique floral. The Cockscomb was so very easy to grow with a fascinating result for a small child's first flower garden.
